Flight Experience on Air France B777 Singapore to Jakarta
In most of my S.E.A trip, I choose to fly on a budget airline like AirAsia, Malindo or TigerAir. With the low-cost airline, it’s certainly a bang for your buck with many travel destinations in the region to choose from. But how is it like to be flown on a B-777 wide body, long haul aircraft despite the short journey? And that curiosity had me to travel on Air France on my trip to Jakarta, back in June 2015.
Air France is one of the major airlines that flew to many destinations to different continent around the world, and having this airline for a short transit flying in S.E.A was purely fun, at least for me.
With more air miles that I had on a budget airline like AirAsia, I could simply convert those to get discounted for my next Jakarta flight, but it wasn’t about the price alone, instead I was so curious to fly on full sized, wide body aircraft with French crew on board, soaring the S.E.A air en route to Jakarta.
For most of you who doesn’t know, Air France has 5th freedom route between Singapore and Jakarta, as the continuation of the flight from Paris – Charles de Gaulle Airport (*Update March 2016 : Air France has ceased the route to Jakarta)
Since flying on this route via Singapore takes less than 2 hours, I could have opted to fly with the same budget carrier with their low fare, but flying on B-777 on a short-haul is a privilege and indeed a great experience for one to remember.
While it’s not common for a major airline to get passengers from a short stop-over, this Air France took the route flying from Paris to Jakarta via Singapore and allows new passengers onboard. Comparing to budget airlines, the return flight cost slightly higher than usual budget carrier regardless of travel distance, but I was lucky enough to get a deal breaker which is close to what offered by budget airlines.
Air France usually comes with a nice deal breaker for the flight on this route. After all, it’s been always intriguing for me to experience this on board this B-777. At the airport, check-in was done in breeze, the desk customer service personnel was friendly and helpful on getting my flimsy printed pass changed to an actual boarding pass.
On board, seats weren’t fully occupied and there were many empty seats in every row. I booked the lowest priced cabin seat which is the Economy seat, and to my surprise, it has plenty of legroom.
They even provide a small pillow, headsets, sleeping eye-pad and a face-towel despite the short haul flight!
As usual on board any aircraft, there will be safety instruction by the crew before the plane takes off. Air France has a creative way of presenting their safety instruction to passengers. It is shown in an interesting video playback on their in-flight entertainment panel rather than the usual cabin crew demonstration onboard.
There are heaps of TV shows, games, movies and music albums to choose from their in-flight entertainment, which makes the entire journey a pleasant one despite the short-haul trip.
All economy class passengers are entitled to a hearty French meal set onboard, with an option to choose your favorite red or white wine. Smoked duck breast with salad, bun, cottage cheese and a slice of peach cake with a small bottle of wine.
Flying with Air France was one of the memorable experience on my short trip to Jakarta. They operate on both their older and newer version of their aircraft. The flight that I took was AF254. To my surprise, it was a brand new cabin with all the interior that seems like it just had its first flight!
This is certainly an option for someone to try their B777 long-haul flight from Paris without having to fly from Paris. *Unfortunately, since March 2016, Air France has ceased the route to Jakarta. There is another route from Singapore to Bali (Denpasar) with partner KLM. Link is here
